Iontophoresis is a special kind of therapeutic treatment commonly used by physical therapists that uses electrical stimulation. This treatment modality is also used to administer medications through the skin and into the body. This treatment is accomplished by the physical therapist using electricity to push ionic-charged medications into the body’s injured tissues.
Iontophoresis is often utilized to treat a wide number of conditions. Whether or not it is an appropriate option depends on the medications used for the specific treatment. The steroid Dexamethasone, for example, is often used in treating inflammation of injured tissues. This steroid works by helping to decrease the swelling and associated pain of the inflamed area.
